It's definitely a change. The frontal image, the CNN quality, the robotic characters. The opening moments of Rumours, co-directed by Canadian Guy Maddin ( Winnipeg, my love ) and his colleagues Evan Johnson ( The Forbidden Room ) and Galen Johnson, must have disoriented fans of his dreamlike and expressionist cinema, a stream of consciousness filled with cinephilia and shots shot with a camera covered in Vaseline. But for his first " normie " (understand, "normal" film) Guy Maddin hit the nail on the head, delivering a hilarious political farce that is still marked by the dreamy lurches and sudden breaks in tone that have made his mark.
